Isley Brothers

They were all brothers, Rudolph, Ronald, O’Kelly, Vernon, Ernie and Marvin. Then they cheated and added cousin Chris Jasper.

It Crawled From The South

R.E.M. put Athens, Georgia, on the rock map. This was a concert billing, recalling films like It Crawled From The Deep and It Came From Outer Space.

It’s A Beautiful Day

Inspired by the weather conditions in San Francisco on the July 1967 day they formed. Their optimism had dimmed by 1978 – or perhaps the weather wasn’t so good. They reformed as It Was A Beautiful Day.

The Iveys

“The Iveys” was a tribute to Buddy Holly. As in The Holly And The Ivy Christmas carol. It coincidentally recalled a street in their native Swansea, Wales. Contrary to reports, it wasn’t a “holly and ivy” corollary to rivals The Hollies, who were also just starting out.

By the time they signed to the infant Apple label in 1968, a name like The Iveys was looking dated. This hadn’t stopped The Hollies from making it big by then, or indeed The Beatles (both named with Holly in mind). The Iveys also risked confusion with The Ivy League and they became Badfinger.

The Ivy League

In the American tradition of “clean-cut” college names (The Crew Cuts, Four Preps, The Lettermen), they hailed from Birmingham, U.K., but imitated U.S. close-harmonies and referenced the league of “top” American universities. They later became The Flowerpot Men.
