Part 8: The Attack

HENRY AND DANIEL ASSUMED their battle stations at the bow of our ship and waited for the order to open fire on the Jolly Roger. Lizzie joined me at the stern in order to give me assistance on steering the ship into position. I felt my palms begin to sweat as the enemy ship drew closer and closer into view. Lizzie placed a calming hand on my shoulder.

“It's going to be fine, Ronnie. Just follow my guidance and we won't have any issues,” she said.

It was growing late in the day, but the sky was still bright and clear, so there was no attempt at secrecy or stealth. Instead, we came on at full speed. Lizzie had judged correctly in our heading so that we were now approaching them directly from the rear. Our best hope was that whoever was manning the crow's nest would not bother to look behind them. We were closing the distance very quickly on the slower vessel and so far that seemed to be the case because it had yet to turn to face us.

“Almost there, almost there. Just a little farther.” Lizzie was whispering now as we closed in on the boat ahead of us.

“NOW! BOYS! OPEN FIRE!” she suddenly shouted at the top of her lungs.

Henry and Daniel immediately stood to their feet behind the cannons and began to fire!

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Shot after shot rang out across the water as the twins fired each cannon in succession before stopping to reload. The shots were well-aimed and struck the rear of the Jolly Roger viciously, but the rudder remained undamaged!

“Again! Hit them again, boys,” Lizzie screamed. “Ragnar, keep us directly behind them!”

As the twins prepared to fire again I ensured that we stayed directly behind the other ship, making it impossible for them to return fire.

BOOM! BOOM! CRASH!!!

Another volley of fire rang out and this time it struck its mark! The rudder was obliterated!

“Okay, guys! Now is when the fun begins!” Lizzie was shouting out as she bounded towards the front of the ship, sword in hand.

I guided our boat carefully up the rear of the Jolly Roger and dropped anchor. Henry and Daniel tossed lines onto the other boat and held us fast. On the other deck, I could hear chaotic shouts as they scrambled to prepare for this sudden attack. Once the lines were tied off myself and the rest of the crew scaled the hull of the enemy ship and began the assault.

The next several minutes went by in an almost complete blur. All four of us went in guns blazing. There were a lot of enemies on board but they were in such a total state of confusion that they did more fleeing than they did fighting. Still, more than one pirate crossed swords with me. Somehow I managed to avoid any serious injuries other than a few cuts and bruises. Lizzie and the twins were experts at this and they quickly dispatched anyone foolish enough to challenge them.
