Chapter 21

The months began to fly by once I started to adjust. Truthfully, there was more to it than just adjusting. I was thankful for my family and Cetron’s family, they came for visits weekly. They knew how important it was for me to see my children and to have support. I probably would have lost my mind not being able to see my boys they were growing fast. With Tay Tay and Lil C being as young as they were, it helped tremendously, because they didn’t have to understand what was going on. It hurt and I cried every time I saw their little handsome faces. It tore me up inside not knowing what the outcome of my circumstances would be. My learning lesson had already begun.

When asked by Cetron, I said I was holding up okay, and although my nerves were a wreck, I knew I couldn’t let him and the kids see me that way.

We held the phones and stared at each other through the glass partition sectioned off for visits. His question hardly fit how he was living.

“Yolese, will you give me full custody of the boys? I think they should be with me.”

Although he’d stepped up as a father, his role as a dangerous drug dealer was the reason for my answer.

“No.”

“No?” he questioned. His entire facial expression changed. He didn’t look so tired and in need of a shave anymore. Angry and surprised was the replacement.

“Yes, no,” I added. I wanted to explain why before he came with the charm. “Well, I will admit that you’re doing a good job, but I’m not thrilled about the risk and the boys being endangered with the drug dealing and weapons.

“Are you serious?” he asked.

“Yeah.” I finished for him.

“Yolese, we need to talk about this some more. You’re going to have to do time,” he explained in a voice that was pleading and restless. We’d argued plenty in the relationship, which he never showed patients.

He sliced me up with his cold hazel eyes.

“I think the boys should be with my family. Both sides can share custody without paperwork, Cetron.” I tried to relax and give him a chance to come to his senses.

Cetron looked up at the ceiling for a moment as though the dull paint would give him better answers.

He looked back at me; neither of us blinked.

“I don’t think so,” he seethed.

I heard the sarcasm. “Please don’t take this to court. Please…I’m begging you. I have enough to deal with already. You’ll be making a big mistake.

“You’re crazy.”

“No, you’re just trying to keep a way to control me.”

I wish I could go home and rid of the building problems in my life, but I was stuck without a ‘get out of jail free’ card.

“You can’t stop me Yolese. I love you, but I’m going to seek custody,” Cetron said finally. He sounded bitter. There was something else, but I couldn’t figure it out at that moment.

I would have slapped his cheek and given him a choice of words like a drunken idiot had the glass and the boys not been there.
