It’s up to you which way you want to wire your brain, towards the negative or towards the positive: Towards the “I can do” versus “I can’t do”, towards the “I am a victim of circumstances” versus “I am the master of my own universe”. In every moment of every day, we have a choice. We often just don’t realise it, because our unconscious and well-established routines exert so much control over how we feel and how we behave.

One of the things I notice when working with individuals and groups is that many people don’t realise they have a CHOICE. We get stuck in ruts, we believe we are victims of our surroundings, martyrs to our choices, or at the mercy of our genes. Indeed, I was put on antidepressants many times as a teenager and in my 20s. It wasn’t until I realised that I could focus my thoughts in a different direction and I built in daily routines and exercises to manage my thoughts and feelings that I realised just how much choice and control I had. I am not saying that antidepressants didn’t serve me earlier in my life or that they will not be useful to many people, and save lives. But they are not the only approach. Sadly, many doctors will only offer you the quick fix! And many of us want the quick fix and are not willing to move into the uncomfortable feelings that go with doing things differently or trying new things out. It’s natural. If I haven’t stated it enough – our brain and body are working hard to keep us safe and that means doing things as we have always done them, and feeling like we have always felt. If we want to do something a different way, we need to get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable.

Here is one very simple technique that, if practiced every day, will compound to make you feel more focused on “I can do” in life to impact on your ‘HOW’. So simple, you might just laugh it off!
