Itâs up to you which way you want to wire your brain, towards the negative or towards the positive: Towards the âI can doâ versus âI canât doâ, towards the âI am a victim of circumstancesâ versus âI am the master of my own universeâ. In every moment of every day, we have a choice. We often just donât realise it, because our unconscious and well-established routines exert so much control over how we feel and how we behave.
One of the things I notice when working with individuals and groups is that many people donât realise they have a CHOICE. We get stuck in ruts, we believe we are victims of our surroundings, martyrs to our choices, or at the mercy of our genes. Indeed, I was put on antidepressants many times as a teenager and in my 20s. It wasnât until I realised that I could focus my thoughts in a different direction and I built in daily routines and exercises to manage my thoughts and feelings that I realised just how much choice and control I had. I am not saying that antidepressants didnât serve me earlier in my life or that they will not be useful to many people, and save lives. But they are not the only approach. Sadly, many doctors will only offer you the quick fix! And many of us want the quick fix and are not willing to move into the uncomfortable feelings that go with doing things differently or trying new things out. Itâs natural. If I havenât stated it enough â our brain and body are working hard to keep us safe and that means doing things as we have always done them, and feeling like we have always felt. If we want to do something a different way, we need to get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable.
Here is one very simple technique that, if practiced every day, will compound to make you feel more focused on âI can doâ in life to impact on your âHOWâ. So simple, you might just laugh it off!
