Far, far away in the forest there was a rustling amongst the leaves. Two little ones came walking along a path. Both wore backpacks and floral tops. And each one carried a stick. The one in the lead shouted and sang the song she’d made up.

Two happy farmers on their way

To work in the fields every day

And eat the cakes that grow there.

The one following seemed a little anxious.

“Will we find it?” he asked. “Is it a long way?”

“I always find everything,” she answered.

“We can run to make it shorter!”

She bounced away along the path.

And he scuttled after her.

Yes, it was Karen and Evert! On their way to the place where they’d be farmers. And they almost knew where it was. Almost.

First there was the path through the forest. Then they’d come to the stream.

But phew, phew, the path through the forest was long and twisty.

Suddenly Evert stopped.

“Is that dangerous?” he asked.

They stood puffing for a moment. Their feet were wet because the grass was wet. They were starting to feel a little cold.

But it was a sunny and beautiful autumn day and everything seemed so peaceful in the forest. Except for the rustling all around them. Yellow leaves floated from the trees. Now and then they heard a little thud.

“What is it?” said Evert. “Something dangerous?”

Thud, thud.

“Nothing dangerous,” said Karen.

“What about the fox?” whispered Evert.

Thud, thud, thud.

Something was falling from the tree. Karen tried to see what was falling. But it went too fast through the air. Then something hit her on the head. An acorn.
