Jazmine enters Mr. Cohen’s 9th grade math class 10 minutes late. Mr. Cohen is in the middle of a lesson, but pauses very briefly to say, “Jazmine, take off your hoodie, you know the rules, and open your book to page 311. Inez, please help her find where we are.” Then, he continues where he left off, walking the students through calculations. Mr. Cohen makes it clear the students are there to learn math, and he pushes them hard with no down time. He calls on every student by name at least 3 times during the lesson. He seldom praises, but when he does praise a student, they sit up taller as though it really means something to them.
