Chapter 9: Landscape Themes to Consider.

We have discussed the importance of certain features that you can include when planning your garden around kids of different ages … now I want to get into some more general ideas for your design to consider.

The best idea is to break your garden up into sections, Have an idea of the overall landscape plan but have the smaller section broken up into what we call Themes, these will blend into each other, hopefully being worked on one at a time.

One way is to get some graph paper and start with the permanent structures that you either want to build, or, keep the ones already there.

Then you can take a good look at the plants you have, choose the plants you would like to keep and those that will be removed. This will become easy when you have determined the themes.

Entertainment areas are one of the main feature themes for people today, but remember that they don’t have to be directly built off the house, a timber decked platform or paved courtyard area can be built anywhere in your yard that you wish to make more of a feature, the only reason for them being close to the house, is for the convenience of access to and from the kitchen, but a secluded garden room area can be created in the yard using either fixed screens, hedges, brick walls, lattice or such like, creating a very pleasant setting for a cosy atmosphere.

Gazebos are quite popular but can be expensive and often look too big and bulky for some yards, Think of an open pergola instead, open beams overhead provide a good structure for small lights that just add to the atmosphere.

Shrubs that vary in shape and size will also give good backing for this area, remembering to place your taller ones at the back with the shorter ones in the front,

Consider lighting up not just the area itself , but also the paths and walkways, this can be achieved with either solar lights or low voltage lights. Both help provide a great atmosphere and make it safer at night.

Up lights in the garden among some of your feature plants will also be a beautiful addition, making it a place you want to be with your friends for an evening drink or two.

Another aspect that is quite popular is some kind of water feature. Not too close but set in the garden, Make sure it is with a fountain or cascade so as to provide the sound of water. Lights around this are always worth the effort.

Your water feature can be as elaborate or as simple as you like, remember that it’s also the sound of the water that helps to create the atmosphere that you are after as well as the look.

You can even make it a major feature, acting as part of the border to a feature entertainment area with a bridge crossing over for access.

If your Entertainment area is just an outside extension
