Hockey practice that evening was not Jacob’s most brilliant moment. Something had him distracted, Nicholas was sure of it. And while as a rule they stopped at the ice cream parlor to celebrate a great practice, a treat might just be what Jacob needed to cheer him up. At least, that was what Nicholas had hoped. It didn’t quite go that way, however.

“You’re awfully quiet tonight,” Nicholas said after they had been sitting in silence for a good five minutes. Usually, Jacob went on in great details about his practice, describing it as though Nicholas hadn’t been right there.

Jacob looked up at him and blurted out, “Do you think Mrs. Newman will tell Dad bad things about me?”

“Bad things like what?” Nicholas asked, surprised the question had even come up. Jacob had always been a model student at school.

Shrugging, Jacob pushed his plastic spoon around the cup of melting ice-cream, swirling the caramel and nuts together. “I don’t know. Maybe she’s making things up.”

“What kind of things?”

“I don’t know,” Jacob repeated, his shoulders hunching a little more. “She doesn’t like me.”

Nicholas forced himself to chuckle, then dipped his spoon in Jacob’s ice cream, drawing a loud protest from him.

“Of course she likes you,” he said, making a show of sucking his spoon clean. “It’s in her job description. She’s gotta like all her students.”

“Not me,” Jacob said, shaking his head and poking at his melting ice cream again. “I can tell. When she’s standing next to me or talking to me, she always smells like—”

He cut himself short at that and gave Nicholas a quick, guilty look.

“I know I’m not supposed to smell her,” he added very quickly. “And I didn’t mean to, I promise. But sometimes I can’t help it, you know?”

Nicholas fought back a smile. “I know, yes.” After a beat, he asked, “So what does she smell like?”

Leaving his spoon in the plastic bowl, Jacob rubbed his nose with the back of his hand as he answered, his tone a little absent.

“She smells like milk when it’s turning bad,” he said in a very low voice. “And sometimes, she smells angry, and sometimes scared. But she can’t be scared of me, right? And I do everything right so why would she be angry with me?”

“Maybe it’s not you,” Nicholas said. “Maybe she’s scared or angry about something else entirely.”

“But she doesn’t smell like that when she talks to the other kids. Just me.”

Jacob’s eyes were pleading for Nicholas to believe him, and to explain. The first was easy; the latter, less so. Nicholas wished he could have explained, but he’d only ever seen the woman for a few minutes during the beginning of the year’s Open House, and had never said more than ‘hello’ to her.

Although he did seem to recall the brief flash of a frown when, upon entering her class, Andrew had introduced himself and Nicholas as Jacob’s parents. Was she one of those closed minds who couldn’t look past the fact
