Six months later…

Sammy presses his back up against my knees and I stroke his hair lightly. He looks cute as shit in his little tux with a white silky pillow clutched in his hands. He’s been hanging on to the thing like his life depends on it, and I don’t have the heart to tell him that the ring sewed to the top is a fake. The real one is tucked safely in Hank’s pocket.

Like me, Hank is standing quietly beside the big flower-covered arch thing the minister is perched beneath. And like me, he’s wearing an expensive button-up shirt with a pair of jeans. Beside Hank, Sean, dressed exactly the same way, is making faces at his daughter and son who are sitting in the front row with Baby.

Everything is exactly how Sharyl wants it to be. We’re standing in the Botanical Gardens on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The flowers are blooming, the butterflies are flitting around, and my best man, my groomsman and I are wearing exactly what she’d picked out for us.

Only Sammy is dressed up. He’s also disturbingly still for a boy just over two years old. So I press my hand against his cheek. “You alright, buddy?”

He looks up at me and whispers. “Yeah Daddy. I jus wanna be good so mommy is happy when she sees me.”

I lean down and kiss the top of his head. “She’ll be happy, Sammy.”

The waiting is killing me and I stare at Shelby’s white tennis shoes as they bounce up and down in front of me. Shelby has a hard time sitting still. So Jack has him in his lap, the flopping feet a concession to his need to move. Beside him, Bell is playing a hand-snatch game with her son, Danny. I think, idly, that my side of the aisle is chock full of kids.

In the second row are Sam and Lisa, their twin girls between them. And Lisa is chatting up one of my brothers. All of my siblings have made it out for this occasion, along with all of Sean and Hank’s band members. There are so many people on my side, and so few on Sharyl’s, that the ushers moved some people over to the other side. I see them standing like sentries at the back. Tak and Mike are wearing the same getup as me, Sean and Hank, but they look far more stylish.

In the front row opposite us, Jessie’s husband Tom sits uncomfortably beside my future mother-in-law, who is wearing a stern look. Bill the Fourth, Marjorie and Timothy don’t look any happier. But they are here. Sharyl’s ‘it’s my way or the highway’ attitude has worked like a charm.

When Sharyl first came back to me, I thought her relationship with her family might be irreparably damaged. But after she put her foot down, things changed pretty easily. They stopped trying to convince her to leave me. They even came over for a couple of visits and met Sammy.
