Kathmandu Blues

Introduction

I wrote the first half of the following story in October ’92 in Pokhara, Nepal, and finished it in the capital Kathmandu a few weeks later. It travelled with me around the world for the next few months in one of a number of blue-backed Nepalese school exercise books in which I kept extensive notes and descriptions of the countries I visited – and for many years I actually forgot that I’d written the story. Going through the journals in ’98, I discovered “Kathmandu Blues” scribbled in my (almost) unreadable handwriting. I re-wrote it extensively that Summer and submitted it to the British small-press magazine The Edge, where it appeared in the Autumn ’99 edition.

“Kathmandu Blues” prefigures the Kéthani stories I began in ’96: it keeps the aliens firmly in the background and concentrates on the humans affected by the arrival of the extraterrestrials on Earth.
