And so on and on. Each of these stories and poems is coherent in itself. A reader innocent of Homer can still read Virgil with profit, and children who have never heard, and perhaps never will hear, of Aeschylus can enjoy Adams’ novel. But an interpreter who wants to catch all that a writer throws at him will have to be alert to these echoes and allusions. A reader will get the poet’s point fully only if he not only knows the prior text but also knows that he needs to know the prior text, and knows when to bring which part of the prior text into play. An interpreter is there to explain what is not in the text. And do we not want to hear everything God says in the Bible?
