Summary

We need to understand how DOK teaching and learning experiences can be tiered based on the demand of the standard and the success of the students. We also need to understand how the DOK levels can be used as a multitiered system of supports to deliver instruction, respond to intervention, extend learning, and make modifications. Each DOK level utilizes the RTI process to guide and support students in demonstrating their learning at the level demanded by a standard’s learning intention or target. The tiers within the DOK levels determine the delivery and intensity of instruction students receive and require. Extended DOK teaching and learning experiences can demand that students demonstrate their learning beyond the DOK or grade level of a standard’s learning intention. The EDOK stages address, assess, and assist exceptional learners or English learners in developing the basic comprehension and communication skills they need to succeed. The GDOKs accelerate and enrich DOK teaching and learning experiences for students who demonstrate high ability, motivation, or potential. Like the RTI tiers, the EDOKs and GDOKs supplement and support students who receive and require specialized services and supports to achieve and surpass proficiency and personal goals and expectations.
