âJane, here you are⦠and with Mr. Darcy. Mother sent me to get you to change and join us for tea, with Mr. Darcy.â Elizabeth looked from one to the other.
âOh yes, please, take this plate to father. I shall change quickly. If you will excuse me, Mr. Darcy. I shall be back shortly.â
âPlease, take your time. I shall take a short stroll in the garden.â Mr. Darcy bowed, and Jane turned and fled. âIf you could show me the way,â he turned to Elizabeth.

Jane was flying not just up the stairs, but she felt like she had no weight. As she stepped through her door, she closed it again and sagged against it. What has just happened? she thought. What does it mean that he came to see me? For what reason? He said it was my letter. Her thoughts demanded answers. The maid she asked for knocked on the door at that moment. She jumped. After letting her in, Jane was in her small clothes in seconds, refreshing herself. She looked into the mirror. He said he found me fetching. Oh, my! Was he flirting with her? Her stomach had butterflies. She did not want to let the feeling go. She never felt this alive⦠No, she felt like that for the whole day when she saw him in London.

âMr. Darcy, if I may.â
âYes, Miss Elizabeth?â
âWhy are you here?â
âI am here with my sister for a sojourn from the Season. I said as much to your mother. I am paying my respects to you and your family.â
âCome now, Mr. Darcy. It is just the two of us,â tried Elizabeth. âWhat do you expect from this? Your appearance here? Jane asked me about you, and how I would respond if you showed up. I never thought of it as a possibility. I must be really losing my touch⦠No⦠I am right. You did not come to see me!â Mr. Darcy looked down examining his boots.
âThe only time I have seen you relaxed was in London, with Jane. You two seemed to be so natural with each other. You sought each otherâs company. You did not know... You are different⦠it is her is it not? I feel like I have just disrupted something.â
Mr. Darcy looked up at her.
âYou have come to see Janeâ¦â Her eyes widened. âShe has always defended you⦠Oh, my! She likes you! Why did she not say anything to me? ⦠Oh, because she saw your interest in me. Oh, dear Jane⦠She even wrote to youâ¦,â Elizabeth was coming to understand the situation. âAm I right? Did you come to see my sister?â
Mr. Darcy reluctantly nodded. This was not how he planned his big conversation to go with Miss Elizabeth. He should have known she would figure it out.
âYou are right, Miss Elizabeth. I am found out.â Mr. Darcy put his hand up; then, wiped his hand over his face. âIt just happened. Would it trouble you, me pursuing her?â
âWhy Mr. Darcy, you have surprised me! Do you really like her?â
âYes.
