By senior year, I had pot for lunch most days:

Having failed to make the boys’ baseball team for three consecutive years, I decided to shift my focus. I did what any hot-blooded, rebellious boy in high school would do: I founded a golf team.

For some reason, despite being in the middle of some of the best courses in the country, Rye had no golf team. I spoke to someone from the administration who introduced me to an alumnus then belonging to Westchester Country Club. Randall was a great man who I believe inherited $10 million and had no aspirations in life besides creating a championship golf team for Rye Country Day School. He outfitted eleven of us with intense yellow cashmere sweaters, blue polyester slacks, and golf bags. Every afternoon he would shuttle us from the school to what is considered one of the top golf courses in the world. Westchester Country Club is home to the Westchester Classic and the U.S. Open.

RCDS’s new team had a thirst not just for winning but also for rum. I kept a bottle of rum in my golf bag unbeknownst to Randall. He generously bought us Cokes for our nine-hole practice round, which we mixed with the rum on the second tee.

The party on the course became infamous and soon dozens of kids were trying out for the team. One afternoon, three varsity baseball players were busted for missing practice so they could hang with us on the golf course. Our first year in the league, we not only outdrank every other team, we failed to lose a single match. We won the league championship, and the team continues on to this day—although my guess is those kids are coming up a little short in the alcohol department. I’m going to have to go back there and look into it.
