Dear Dorothy:

Your letter of October 26 arrived on November 1—a fine speed of delivery. Ficher immediately telephones me every time there is a letter from you. He lives in the same district.

My concert was well attended. There were reviews, and there will be an interview in Argentina Libre. I wish I could command such attention in Boston or New York. However, being called maestro norteamericano, and all that goes with it, does not alter my psychology, which remains murky. I wish I could leave it below the equator, as you suggest, but I see only too clearly that it would pursue me to the South Pole. Yet geography does excite me, and I look at the Southern Cross with peculiar wonderment, although it is just a pattern of four stars, which need all the pious imagination of the early navigators to be interpreted as a holy symbol. I am looking forward to my flight to Chile with adolescent delight. I have not lost the capacity for being impressed by natural wonders. If I could organize my work without a waste of time which is still my major trouble, I might be happy…. I am facing realities in my own way, tested by an experience for over twenty years, since the retreat from the Crimea, which is now being reenacted with such weird similarity. Only then there was a place to go—Constantinople, Paris. Now there is no way out for the Russians in the peninsula.

… But even so, I am having a headache trying to figure out how and when I can get back to organize my book, which I am supposed to deliver in January. The other day I had such a brainstorm, that I don’t know what to do with myself. There was no reason for it, except a terrible homesickness and mental fatigue from the multiplicity of languages, tasks and people. I wonder what statesmen do to complete their schedule….
