Why am I so nervous? This is only my fake wedding day, right? It’s not real. So there’s no reason for the butterflies in my stomach or the slightly dry taste in my mouth. I gulp back half a flute of champagne, ignoring the warning glare of the hairstylist trying to wrestle my locks into submission.

I stare into my reflection, hoping to see some clarity or advice in my own eyes. They look panicked. Fat lot of good you are, I tell myself.

There’s a knock on the door and I practically jump off the stool I’m perched on. Someone opens it and speaks softly. It’s not the woman doing my hair because she’s busy poking my scalp with jeweled clips. My eyes narrow suspiciously. Those better not be real diamonds.

“All set,” the hairstylist says. She gives me a smile in the mirror. “You look gorgeous.”

“Thanks,” I reply with a wan smile. What the hell am I doing here? Maybe I should have just faced into my embarrassment. But John is fun. Annoying, but still fun to be around. Do I maybe want that for real? Is that what’s got me all in a flurry of nerves? I swallow hard. Oh dear.

Someone tugs me up by my elbow from behind and then suddenly a soft cloud of white silk chiffon is descending over my head and settling like water in a pool over my curves. I stare. I didn’t get to see the dress when Mathilde was working her magic. There was no mirror in the dressing room then, and she barked at me every time I dared to lower my head. I knew what it felt like, of course, but I hadn’t really seen it until now.

The dress is pure genius. So simple, it looks impossibly expensive. The chiffon and the underdress of silk satin are cut on the bias so they stretch and move with me instead of constraining my figure. The silk hugs my breasts and hips without puckering and I feel like a queen. No, make that an empress. I feel tall and powerful and capable of handling anything that comes my way. For the first time since I was ushered in here to dress for the ceremony, I smile. And my smile is radiant.

I double check the light application of makeup. Also expensive as it isn’t smudged and not a smidge is on the beautiful dress. It’s also so light it’s almost not there and I wonder if John or Rebecca had the input on that. Either way, I love it because I still look like me. The same person who answered the door I think, a woman with an efficient chignon wearing a basic black suit hands me my bouquet, which isn’t typical at all. I eye it with curiosity. There’s a message being conveyed with the green leaves and unusual flowers. Probably something cryptic that only John would find the time or interest in creating. I’m fresh out of my language of flowers, so I’ll have to look it up later or get him to tell me.
