AKI FOLDED HIS arms against his chest, leaning against the wall of the lobby before Ben’s apartment. “I don’t know. Ben’s normal? That’s a pretty high bar where he’s concerned.”

Nate kept his hand on the door handle. “Just go easy on him, okay? He’s had a really rough time and he’s still processing it all.”

“But he is processing it?” Grant also had his arms crossed. He watched Nate closely.

“Well, yeah.” They hadn’t discussed it, not in those words. Or in any words, really. But Ben was using sentences again. That was something, right? “Just no sudden moves, loud noises, raised voices, that kind of thing. He’s a little on edge.” Nate led the way back into the kitchen.

Ben sat at the kitchen table, exactly where Nate had left him. He hadn’t touched the plate of toast, and Nate could only hope he’d had some of the coffee. He looked up as Nate entered and his body tensed as he took in Grant and Aki.

Aki snorted. “Having breakfast at sunset. Yeah, that’s really normal.”

Nate squeezed Aki’s shoulder in warning. “Baby steps,” he hissed. “Hey, Ben. You remember Aki and Grant?” He placed his hand on Ben’s back.

Ben swiveled his head toward Grant and said nothing. He held his body rigidly, as if he thought he was going to have to move quickly, but Nate thought he wasn’t as tense as he had been.

“So, Ben.” Aki was incapable of staying still, and this was no exception. He helped himself to a seat, his leg jiggling. “It’s really cool to see you being your usual cheery self—ow!” He shot Grant a dark look.

“Hello, Ben.” Grant didn’t seem bothered by the lack of response. He took the seat next to Aki. “Good to have you back.” He deliberately turned his attention to Nate. “You heard the latest news from the Registry?”

“No. There’s been a decision?”

Grant shook his head. “After talking themselves into a frenzy, the council realized that there’s no way they can try Ben without knowing what kind of state he’s in. His hearing’s on hold until he’s found and a proper assessment done. They’re now debating the legality of the Final Register.”

Aki leaned across the table to snag a piece of Ben’s toast. “You know, if you turned yourself in, you’d probably get massive bonus points with the council.”

Nate tensed, but Ben didn’t react to the theft of his toast. “Aki.”

“It’s not a bad suggestion. After all, you can’t hide forever. And the sooner Ben meets with his legal representatives, the better case they’ll be able to build,” Grant said.

Nate shook his head. “We need more time. Ben’s had an ordeal. You don’t recover from that in a few days. He needs to work up to it.”

Aki chewed his piece of toast with a frown. “Realistically, how much time do you think you have? You’ve brought Ben back to his own apartment. It’s the first place anyone will look for him.”

“They looked. They didn’t find him.”

Aki’s expression turned thoughtful. “I guess they’re looking for Ben, not you.
