The Cabin

Kate took a right turn out of the glen next to the lake. In the rear-view mirror, she saw Stan turn in the opposite direction. She and Cece drove for a few minutes and she took another right turn.

“This isn’t the way back to your house, is it?” Cece made it sound more like a statement than a question.

“No. I want to drive around the lake and get a look at that cabin before we go home.”

“Kathryn, you know you shouldn’t do this. Phil’s gonna be mad at both of us if something happens.”

Kate made another turn down a dirt road. “All I want to do is take a quick look. If anybody’s there, we’ll turn around and leave.” She slowed the car as they approached a gravel driveway that led down to the cabin. The house was hidden by a thick grove of evergreen trees, but Kate could see a small dock that stretched out onto the lake. No cars. No people. She turned onto the long drive leading to the cabin. The tires clattered over the pebbles as they drove down the rutted path.

Cece leaned forward. “It’s awfully dark here.”

“It’s a little wooded, that’s all. Nice spot for a cabin.” Kate pulled the car to the end of the drive. “Oh, look. We can park in that grove of trees and nobody will see the car.” She maneuvered into the hidden area and parked. “Let’s see what’s here.” She opened her door and stepped out.

Cece followed her. “Okay. But at the first sign anything’s wrong, let’s leave.”

“It’ll only take a second.” The cabin’s main door was located on the side of the house. Kathryn stepped up on the small stone porch and knocked. No answer. She knocked again, louder this time, and listened for sounds of movement inside. She tried the door knob, and it turned with a rattle, but didn’t open. With Cece on her heels, she moved down from the stoop and walked over to a window that was next to the door. They tried to look in, but curtains were drawn and they couldn’t see anything inside.

“Hmm,” Kate said and continued around to the back of the cabin that faced the lake, with Cece right behind. They walked onto a small patio that butted against a sliding glass door. But that door was locked too, and drapes were drawn over the door. Kate knocked again. Nothing.

“Oh, look. There’s a shed. I wonder if that’s where they keep a canoe or something.” The shed was locked with a combination lock. Kate shook it, but it didn’t budge.

“This is enough for me. I don’t enjoy snooping around other people’s houses, especially this one.” Cece turned. “I’m going back to the car, and you need to—”

The sound of tires on the gravel path brought them both to attention.

“Uh-oh.” Cece grabbed Kate’s arm. “Now what are we going to do?”

The two women stood like statues as the sound of the car grew closer.

Cece’s eyes were so wide Kate
