Chapter Twelve

In the ancient days, they said all roads led to Rome. In my life, all roads seem to lead to Clovette. You’d think, after the way things turned out on our last little jaunt, Carson would hesitate to return. Instead he seems eager. The only thing I can figure is that after continuous meals at the motel restaurant, he’s plagued by fond memories of the Fork and Finger, and stewed tomatoes and macaroni night is coming up.

We set out early Tuesday morning. The watery winter sun has erupted, brightening the snow as we head north again. Precious is the back seat rider, and I notice something new in Carson’s rental car: One of those pine-scented evergreen air fresheners hanging from the mirror.

We almost had another passenger. Carson heard from Bill, who heard from Dwaine, that Luther had been attempting to convince the chief a Fortuna cop ought to accompany us.

Luther, to be specific.

He might be behind me now, hugging the door as Precious treated us to eau de Alpo, if someone hadn’t been needed to take Sheena’s body for autopsy. Her death, after all, occurred under “suspicious circumstances.” I figure Luther offered to accompany the county coroner to Columbus for two reasons. First, he gets out of Fortuna. Second, the coroner is a retired doctor with a fondness for restaurants where the steaks are thick and the waitresses skinny and barely dressed. Luther, I suspect, is the kind of man who never turns down a free meal and a cheap thrill.
