Ay, Caramba!

As I shimmied through the tables and back to my seat, I noticed Ian stand, which I thought was a somewhat outdated gesture for a man to perform. Although Ian demonstrated some peculiar mannerisms and clearly wasn’t being totally honest with me, I considered it a polite and welcome gesture. Anyway, outdated or not, it certainly wouldn’t be something Alistair or his father would have performed.

Pleased that I’d managed to hold my shit together, complete my ablutions and not allow my chin to tremble, I decided to stop tip-toeing around this Ian bloke, go straight for the jugular and discover what the purpose was of this meeting. Then, I’d plan to set about getting my life on track. Time spent collecting my thoughts when holed up in that toilet cubicle had reminded me to slip on my suffer-no-fools protective armour and put a halt to those around me who seemed to be sucking my mental strength.

After properly unpacking my stuff, I planned to put in a good few hours job hunting, tear a strip off my solicitor for allowing Alistair to ride roughshod over me, and then perhaps wallow in a vat of Prosecco. That would conclude day one of my new life, post living in limbo at Karen’s, post Alistair, and post any man who thought they could mess with my emotions.

“Blimey, that’s a bit old-fashioned. Can’t say I’ve met many men who stand for a lady when she returns to the table.”

Ian, open-mouthed, seemed mesmerised by something happening near the pub entrance.

I glanced around, following his gaze before returning my attention to Ian, who appeared stuck in some strange trance. “Err … hello, anyone there?” I waved the palm of my hand in front of his eyes.

“Darling, how could she see me? And how rude! Bitch, I accept, but vainglory … really?”

“Ian?” I peered at him, my hand gesture failing to raise him out of his catatonic state.

“Oh, sorry,” he grinned, turning his attention from the pub entrance to me as I settled back onto my chair before slowly lowering himself to his, whilst clutching what appeared to be a folded letter.

I glanced at my wine and shrugged to myself. If Ian were intent on drugging me, he would have presumably poisoned my first glass. So, I plucked it up, confident I would be okay. “Thank you.” I raised the glass at him before taking a sip.

“Oh, you’re welcome.”

“Yes, you enjoy it. I’ll just watch and slowly dehydrate,” Deana spouted whilst aggressively folding her arms.

“Ian, besides being Deana’s nephew, I know nothing about you. I think I’ve already said far too much and, based on the fact that we don’t know each other, I’m concerned about the direction of where the conversation is heading.”

Ian offered a knowing nod, presumably accepting my concerns. “Just to offer some assistance, that’s all. I’ve been asked to see if I can step in and help you out.”

“By who?”

“Oh, not well thought through, was it, darling? What are you going to say now? I suggest you don’t tell her it’s the Powers-That-Be who have set the mission.
