— Avoiding disasters: You know yourself better than anybody on this planet, so how you present yourself is going to be the single most important determinant on how somebody else sees you. If you enter a room like you’re walking onto a yacht (as Carly Simon says), you’re going to give a very different impression than if you’re all hunched over, looking depressed, and being terrified that somebody will ask your name or your opinion. What this boils down to is that when you’re meeting someone for the first time, make eye contact and extend your hand—even if your palms are a little sweaty, you’re better off shaking a hand than not. And make sure that your posture is erect without being stiff.

When in doubt, check yourself out in front of a mirror, just like they do in the movies. You don’t have to practice an opening line, since just saying “Hello” will always work. Don’t feel that there’s a perfect opening gambit, just make sure that you approach somebody the way that you’d like to be approached.

When I did a special for my book Dating for Dummies on the Discovery Channel, I actually had somebody practice approaching one of his roommates who was pretending to be a girl. Basically, what I had him do was try to keep his posture upright but relaxed. His chin was parallel with the floor, he made eye contact, and his arms were loosely swinging by his side. By doing the same, you’ll look confident and relaxed as opposed to rigid, terrified, depressed, or any of the other negative possibilities.
