The final balcony moment of the series is Frasier admitting to Martin and Niles that he is scared to leave Seattle to start his new job in San Francisco, as he says, “I’m happy for myself. And scared too. But it’s a good scared.” Perhaps as Frasier steps outside he is able to look inwardly on himself, just as many of the other characters do on that balcony.

The Montana

A strong contrast to Frasier’s sleek, high-end preferences is Niles’s “grand over the top style.”[40] Niles’s taste is mostly displayed as he moves into his own apartment, the Montana, during his separation from Maris. A major continuous storyline throughout the series is the on again/off again marriage between Niles and Maris, ultimately ending in his divorce being finalized in Season 6. Due to his financial struggles with the cost of divorce lawyers, Niles is forced to economize to the point of subletting his beloved apartment at the Montana, a necessity that becomes apparent when Niles is forced to pack his own lunches. “My God, is this your lunch? A bologna sandwich? And a fruit cocktail?! Oh, Niles. You see what these lawyers have reduced you to?”[41] The divorce from Maris represents not only financial failure to him but also many of his failures in life. Living at the Montana means so much more to Niles than just a nice apartment, or having financial means; it also means he’s made it. He’s achieved something. When he first moves to the building he exclaims, “I have some wonderful news. I just signed a lease for an apartment in one of the most exclusive buildings in Seattle.”[42]

The apartment itself is a massive, gorgeous space, with dark wood floors and paneling contrasting the light beige furniture. For Niles, everything is overstated wealth, everything is heightened.[43] This is an extremely different style from Frasier’s, as it is much more classical and ornamental than his brother’s streamlined, modern apartment. We see soft curves compared to Frasier’s harsh lines, dark colors versus light, and more pillows and scattered trinkets than Frasier’s uncluttered and organized home. There are no windows in his main living room, and we learn there are three floors featuring a library, study, separate kitchen, gift-wrap room, and multiple guest rooms. Both Frasier and Niles surround themselves with antiques; however, they are very different kinds. Where Frasier tends toward exotic, pre-Columbian objects, Niles leans toward tapestries and Renaissance style. Impressively so, both brothers express their pompous and pretentious lifestyles in very different ways.

Niles’s apartment situation becomes a means to explore and showcase the chaos in his life. He wants to break free of Maris, but doesn’t want to leave the comfort and luxury he has come to find with her mansion and wealth. He eventually decides that leaving her is better than staying, and gives it all up. Moving into the Montana highlights a moment of independence for him, as if he is finally taking control of his life, rather than constantly being dominated by Maris. As
