KAIA

A long moment of awkward silence stretched over the table after Eric and Darlene's departure.

Kaia had never heard Gilbert talk like that about Eric, not to his face and not behind his back. He'd joked about his brother's dating habits, but it had always sounded good-natured. He must be really riled up to lash out at him like that.

"You shouldn't have said that." Her mother glared at Gilbert. "What has gotten into you?"

"I don't know." He let out a sigh. "I lost it for a moment there. The only thing that bothers me about Eric's penchant for women who are too young for him is that he's not looking for someone suitable to settle down with. I don't want him to be one of those guys who are still alone and childless in their late fifties, wearing a damn toupee and baking their skin in tanning salons to look younger. That's the image I had in my mind when I said that he's an embarrassment to the family. I was thinking of him in the not-so-distant future."

Kaia had to admit that the picture Gilbert had painted of future Eric was depressing. It was good that Darlene viewed him only as a step in her journey of self-discovery and not as a possible partner. She was too old to have children, and Eric deserved to be a father.

He'd had a shitty experience, getting married young to a person who turned out to be a control freak with rage issues. It had soured him for future relationships, but his marriage had ended four years ago, and it was about time for him to get over it.

As the dining hall's door opened, everyone shifted toward it, expecting to see Eric and Darlene returning, but it wasn't them.

Kaia knew immediately that the guy pushing a stroller with a baby girl in it was William's boss. Kian was the most stunning male Kaia had ever seen. A god, or rather a demigod. No human was that perfect, and neither were the immortals she'd met so far.

How did he manage to go unnoticed? Did he thrall everyone he encountered to forget him? Or did he just live the life of a recluse as William had told them, and avoid being seen in public?

The two men walking right behind him were unnaturally gorgeous as well, and given how their eyes scoped the dining hall and her family, it was pretty obvious that they were Guardians. They were both wearing light jackets even though it wasn't cold, and Kaia was willing to bet that they were hiding weapons under them.

The three women and the baby in the stroller were all beautiful, but they could at least pass for humans. The blond with the kind face was no doubt Kian's wife, the tall brunette who looked like an Amazonian warrior woman was with the redhead, and the one with the penetrating green eyes was with the blond Guardian with the stoic expression.

Out of the three males, he seemed the most dangerous despite his angelic features.
