Chapter Ten

“Welcome to our temporary den,” Sabine said.

Alex walked into a large, brightly decorated room. He thought he would see cribs and a play area, but his jaw dropped open at what greeted him instead.

Four large men stood at attention at the back wall while three women rushed around grabbing toys. An older man stood to Alex’s left. His gray hair was combed back off his face and held in a small queue at the nape of his neck. Shrewd ice-blue eyes watched Alex as he came into the room, but Alex didn’t pay him much mind. His gaze was trapped by the scene in the center of the room. Four of the cutest wolf pups he’d ever seen were rolling around on a green mat.

Sabine hugged him from behind. She peered around his arm at the little ones. “Aren’t they adorable?”

“Yes, but where are the children?”

She released him and pointed. “Those are the children.”

Alex couldn’t believe it. He shook his head, and she countered with a firm nod. “They’re not born this way. We give birth to human children, but after our second birthday we undergo our first change. These four were born within weeks of each other.”

“How long do they stay like this?”

“Fourteen weeks. They’re very vulnerable like this, but they’ll start to grow pretty fast.” She led him to the man, tension radiated off him, and it was obvious to Alex this wasn’t someone who trusted easily.

“Alex, allow me to introduce our omega, Roberto.”

Alex held a hand out, but the man just stared at it. He looked to Sabine for guidance. “Forgive me,” she said to both men. “Alex is new to us as I’m sure you’ve heard, Roberto. He doesn’t know all of our traditions yet. It’s my fault for not telling him. Alex, it is tradition to bow to those in the clan with a higher ranking. It’s a sign of respect.”

Alex turned his attention back to Roberto and bowed his head as he’d seen others do. The older man held his hand out. “Welcome to our clan.”

Alex took it in a firm grip. “Thank you.”

“Berto, how are the kids doing?”

“All good. They are about four weeks into the transition and they’ve become accustomed to being in their new form. And you, Alex, have you grown accustomed to it yet?”

“Not yet.”

“Perhaps you should spend some time with the children, they could teach you a thing or two about acceptance.”

“Be nice,” Sabine said to the older man. She took Alex’s hand and led him closer to the little ones. She sat in the middle of the mat and patted the space next to her. Alex took a seat, his eyes wide as the pups scurried around him. The largest one barked once as he ran to them, but before he got within touching distance he scooted back and barked again. Sabine looked over her shoulder. “You’ve taught them well.”

“They are quick learners.”

Sabine turned her attention back to the man at her side. “This is our future, Alex.
