Chapter 10

When they set off over the arching purple roots, Del felt like a little fish flitting between the airborne lily pads. She looked up toward the canyon rim. High above, the wide, flat leaves were still streaming in the storm, the leathery flap a low concussion in her ears. Down here, the thick stalks were just slightly swayed in the direction of the downslope wind, but when she touched the fibrous surface, the stalk vibrated slightly from the force of the gale.

She was on a new world! If only they weren’t being hunted and didn’t have to save the Prayer from blundering into something worse so she could be properly thrilled.

Of course, she did get to be marooned with Ivan, so…

She glanced at him as they zigzagged between the lily pad stalks, their boots shuffling up small clouds of dust. Because of the geothermal heat, she’d taken off her jacket, and he’d never put his back on after she used the cattle prod on him. He’d left off the goggles too.

“My astral matrix is sensitized to most forms of radiative energy,” he’d told her when she’d asked if he wanted help getting redressed. “I perceive more when they are exposed.”

“You see through your skin?”

He shrugged. “See. Hear. Taste. All of those, none of those. The matrix lines are their own sense.”

“And you sense the whole universe.” She shook her head. “No wonder you’re so quiet.”

Watching him as they walked, she thought she understood him a little better. To feel everything, all around, at all times, how strange that must be, how expansive and yet lonely. He’d told her that the mapping of energy on his skin made him too separate, unable to relate to anyone else. She hadn’t quite understood. But now, in this alien place, wondering if they’d survive, she too felt lost and desperate to connect.

But he was so damned intimidating. Not just his size or his fangs or even his quiet self-possession. It was…

It was his virginity. No woman could be blamed for doubting herself in the face—the austere, handsome face—of such purity.

Or maybe she could be blamed for wanting to sully it, just a little.

When she snorted to herself, he glanced over. “Doing all right?”

“Oh, sure. Yeah, doing fine.” Although she’d be doing better if she was doing him…

Another inappropriate giggle escaped her.

“You seem distracted,” he said. “When you need to rest, say so.”

“Yup, when it’s time to go to bed, I’ll definitely let you know.” She cleared her throat. “I think the ground is getting rockier, and these lily pads are thinning.”

In another minute, they crossed out of the lily pad forest onto slickrock footing, too dense apparently for the frond roots. Overhead, they had a clear view of the roiling sandstorm winds. Sifting down, the dust scintillated faintly in the hazy light.

“This is much easier walking,” she said. “We should make good time.” Not as good as bedtime…

Ivan peered up. “There is ionic interference in the dust. Makes it hard to feel through my matrix, and we’ll get no clear reading from the map sensors.
