Bowie managed a further three hits in 1982, despite not being “active”. A Christmas collaboration with Bing Crosby Little Drummer Boy, an EP of Jaques Brel covers Baal’s Hymn and Cat People with Georgio Moroder.

So, then as now, you just cannot escape David Bowie, even when he is not really there. In 2013, He, or His legend, was omnipresent once more, and hearing His music, perhaps for the first time, will have influenced a new generation of musicians. He Himself was absent and has yet to make a public statement beyond a few words, even on the occasion of the death of his old friend and inspiration, Lou Reed. He did not give one interview in support of His actually-rather-good new record, The Next Day. Such are His still mysterious ways.

Another devotee of David Bowie was Grace Jones. Born in Jamaica, her parents moved to New York when she was a teenager, where she became a model. She was very successful, working with Helmut Newton and others, subsequently moved to Paris and graced the covers of Elle and Vogue. During her time in Paris she shared an apartment with Jerry Hall and Jessica Lange. Can you imagine the scenes? Or indeed the queue for the bathroom?

It’s really not hard to discern how she succeeded once you’ve seen her. She is a living sculpture. Flipping Bowie’s androgyny on itself she came across as part Amazon warrior and part mahogany statue, fierce and proud. Camp as Christmas, mad as a mongoose and wholly sexual, with a temper and ego that saw many reduced to tears, she is a true one-off. I’d LOVE to be stuck in a lift with her, but probably not overnight.
