The speeches were interminably boring. Long, rambling discourses about the groom and his love of snakes, and the bride and her love of spiders. At least that was what Darcy thought the speeches were about. They were full of in-jokes from friends, and he had his hands full with a table of cackling women teasing him and Abby: Paula and her coven.

The group was determined to embarrass Darcy, Abby, and themselves. Wine was involved, but luckily there was a space between him and them.

An empty chair. Adrian’s place.

He hadn’t made an appearance, and Darcy went from concerned about vague things like gangrene in his foot to being pissed that the idiot was hiding from his family or from him.

The dinner ended a little before ten, and there was dancing after, but Abby didn’t want to dance or stay or have anything to do with anyone.

“Michael has more data,” she explained with a smile.

Darcy didn’t like to point out that she was smiling at using his name, and escorted her back to her room. When she went in and closeted herself away, he felt restless and needed to get out for air. The urge to knock on Adrian’s door was strong. What if the idiot really was hurt? Like seriously enough for Darcy to have to do something?

In the end, he didn’t. He fought the instinct to find out and went out for a walk, down the cliffs, along the beach, a long circular path, until he was back at the hotel and it was nearly midnight. There were a few people in the lounge area, and he bypassed them and went through the back corridor.

“…spend time with her and not me!”

“You’re being ridiculous, Charlie.”

He heard the arguing before he rounded the corner and stopped in his tracks.

“It’s not ridiculous when you won’t even come to bed with me. I bet you’d go with Abby. I bet she could have a baby. She can do everything else.”

“Please.” The second voice belonged to Graham. “I didn’t return a single one of her calls, in case you thought I was cheating on you. This is ridiculous. We need to talk. I love you.”

Sobs followed Graham’s plea, and Darcy felt like the worst kind of voyeur. He turned to leave, only to be followed by the rapid click of high heels.

“Wait!” Charlie called, and he guessed she was talking to him. He didn’t want to get involved in this, and he took his time turning to face her. She looked like she’d spent hours crying, her mascara trailing down her face, her skin blotchy. “What are you doing here?” she snapped.

He wasn’t sure how to answer that one. He was in a hotel, walking in a public place. He had every right to be there.

“Charlie?” Graham rounded the corner and stopped when he saw Darcy.

Charlie glanced from him to Darcy, and then, as if someone had pulled a switch, she threw herself at Darcy, wrapping her hands around his neck and dragging him down for a kiss.
