Permission to Hate

Hate crimes have increased in the United States for the third consecutive year. The Trump presidency has witnessed some of the most horrific hate crimes in our country’s history. But how much of this can be attributed to Donald Trump’s presidency? The answer to that question can arguably be found in his rhetoric. While Trump has never specifically told his followers to carry out hate crimes, his hateful rhetoric and derogatory language has the power to inspire hate crimes.

The Rhetoric of Trump

Trump has a long history of being accused of racism. As discussed earlier, in the 1970s Trump and his father Fred were sued by the Department of Justice for racial discrimination in their renting practices. Then in the 1980s, Trump was criticized for race-baiting due to a series of full-page ads he paid over $80,000 for in several newspapers. The ads focused on the high-profile Central Park Jogger case, in which Trisha Meili, a twenty-eight-year-old investment banker, was assaulted and raped in Central Park, leaving her in a coma for twelve days. On the night of the attack, five teenagers, four of whom were black and one who was Latino, were arrested for the attack on the young female white jogger. Less than two weeks after the attack, Trump paid for a full-page ad in several newspapers that called for bringing “back the death penalty” for the “savages” who carried out the attack, saying he wanted “criminals of every age” “to be afraid.” The ad also read:

Mayor Koch has stated that hate and rancor should be removed from our hearts. I do not think so. I want to hate these muggers and murderers. They should be forced to suffer . . . Yes, Mayor Koch, I want to hate these murderers and I always will. . . . How can our great society tolerate the continued brutalization of its citizens by crazed misfits? Criminals must be told that their CIVIL LIBERTIES END WHEN AN ATTACK ON OUR SAFETY BEGINS!1
