TB303 Leads

Although we have already discussed the use of a TB303 during bass programming, they remain a versatile machine and are equally at home creating lead sounds by simply pitching the bass frequencies up by a few octaves. The most notable, if old school classic, example of this was on Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of Consciousness’. This same effect can be recreated on most analogue modelled synthesizers since it only requires the use of a single saw oscillator.

The amplifiers attack, sustain and release are set to zero, and the decay is then adjusted to suit the style of sound the producer wishes to achieve. A 12 dB low-pass filter is employed with a low cut-off setting but the resonance set just below self-oscillation. The filter envelope is a copy of the amplitude envelopes setting although the decay should be set just short of the amplifiers decay stage. Filter key-follow is often employed to create additional movement but further modulation is often applied through velocity modulation of cut-off so that the harder the note is struck, the more the filter opens.

Finally the timbre is run through a distortion unit, and the results are filtered with a plug-in filter. Depending on the melody, it may also benefit from increasing the amplifiers decay so that the notes overlap one another and employing portamento on the synthesizer so the notes slur into one another when played.
