Chapter Eleven

Trish stood in the dark at the front window and watched the taillights of Ian’s car disappear down the driveway. Suddenly the house that had always been so warm and cozy had an empty feel.

He was only going to be on the West Coast for two days, but the time seemed to stretch on in front of her endlessly. She was sorry she’d already done the dinner dishes and finished the laundry. She needed something to do.

The ringing phone interrupted her thoughts. She walked into the kitchen and picked up the cordless telephone. When she answered and heard Ian say hello, her heart gave a little leap.

“Trish, could you go up to my office and check to make sure I unplugged the mug warmer?”

“Sure. No problem.” She wished the sound of his voice didn’t make her feel so wonderful. She headed toward the stairs.

There was a long pause as she waited for him to say goodbye.

“I hope the phone didn’t wake Emma.”

Trish laughed as she climbed to the second floor. “She’s such a good sleeper, I doubt she’d wake if the phone was in her crib.”

Ian chuckled. “Well, I’d better go.”

She flipped on the light in his office. “Have a good flight.”

“Thanks. You take care of yourself.” He disconnected.

Trish pressed the off button, then held the phone against her chest. “I will, Ian. You take care, too,” she whispered.

She crossed to his desk and checked the tiny hot plate he used to keep his endless cups of coffee warm while he wrote. He hadn’t forgotten to unplug it.

This was the first time she’d been in his office without him here. He’d made it very clear he did not want to be interrupted as he worked, so she hadn’t had an opportunity to give it a good cleaning. His work hours were erratic enough she hadn’t wanted to start the job and annoy him by being in here when he was ready to start work.

She went downstairs, checked on Emma and traded the cordless phone for the crib monitor and a bucket of cleaning supplies. She cleaned every inch of his office, taking great care not to disturb the piles of papers on his desk. Then she went into his bedroom and tidied up. His bed was made, but some of his drawers were open, as if he’d scooped things out to pack and then just left. She tidied things up, then decided to shower and crawl into bed.

As she lay curled up under the cozy down comforter, she found herself thinking about Ian instead of drifting off to sleep. The big party would be tomorrow night. He’d be there with all the stars of the movie, and all the other beautiful people who attended an event like that. And Joyce.

She’d seen coverage of movie preview parties on the television shows that followed the entertainment industry. All the beautiful women in their glittering dresses and makeup and jewelry and the men in tuxedos.

Ian had taken his tuxedo. She’d seen it hanging on his closet door, still in the bag from the cleaner.
