The Drood

It was a relief to be on a proper road at last, rather than hiking clumsily across frozen fields. Much easier on the feet: almost as good as having a rest.

Also, before long, they saw several more dragonflies passing overhead, each carrying a luminous D. That was reassuring. They weren’t lost. (Unless the dragonflies were lost, of course.)

The sun was at its brightest, which wasn’t particularly bright but at least took the worst chill off the air.

And—best of all!—they’d been promised that the next lot of people they met wouldn’t try to kill them.

All of these things made Dhikilo feel they were finally making good progress, even though, to be honest, they hadn’t achieved anything yet, mission-wise, apart from staying alive and walking in the same general direction as some weird insects.

Mrs Robinson was no longer trying to disguise her limp. The bandage was still in place but had a red stain in the middle of it. Dhikilo imagined Ruth emptying the dirty clothes basket, holding up this scarf and saying, “What a shame. I’ll wash it, but that stain will never come out.”

“Does it hurt?” she asked the sphinx.

“Yessss,” said Mrs Robinson.

“Shall we stop?”

“I will ssstop,” said the sphinx, “when I mussst. Not before.”
