DESCRIPTION Tuber depressed-globose, often rather flat above, up to 25cm (10in) diameter (occasionally more in cultivated specimens, to 36cm/15in), becoming corky and fissured with age, rooting mainly from the shoulders and sides, leaving the base bare. Leaves very variable, but the commonest shape encountered is cordate with 2–3 pairs of angled or short lobes in the lower half, giving the general shape that of the ivy leaf, but leaves on different plants may be lyre-shaped, oblong, lanceolate to broadly heart-shaped, with or without lobes or angles, the lamina 3–15cm (1.2–6in) long, 2.4–13cm (0.9–5.1in) wide, and the margin may be faintly to markedly toothed, with the basal sinus narrow but deep, the basal lobes diverging to somewhat overlapping; leaf colour is very variable but is commonly grey-green with a hastate pattern in a darker or paler shade, or in pewter, silver, or cream, sometimes the leaves with a double hastate pattern or with an overall cast of grey, silver or pewter above, while beneath they are usually green with a flush of red or purple, but rarely as deeply coloured beneath as in some other species; petioles 7.5–27cm (3–10.8in) long, usually elbowed in the lower half. Pedicels elbowed in the lower half, 8–20cm (3.1–8in) long, greenish to reddish-brown or purple, coiling from the top downwards as the young fruits begin to develop. Flowers appearing before or with the young leaves, occasionally earlier, sweetly scented or unscented; corolla pale to deep pink, pinkish-purple or reddish-purple, with a double V-shaped, purple-magenta mark at the base of each petal, rarely flowers pure white; corolla lobes oblong to elliptical, usually erect and twisted but not always so, 14–22mm (0.6–0.9in) long, strongly auricled at the base; style not or only very slightly protruding.
