“You know,” Ash shouted as they flew through the twilight above the Syrian desert, “when someone says they need to make a quick stop on the way, they usually mean like at the grocery store for milk.”

“I don’t drink milk. My dragon is lactose intolerant. But we get enough calcium from bones.”

“Bones? What does that mean?”

“You’ll see,” Adam replied.

Ash closed her eyes as the warm air blew her hair back. Then she remembered it wasn’t hair. It was fur.

Her fur.

It all felt like a dream, and Ash shuddered as she thought back to earlier, when she’d stood there barefoot in the sand, gasping as Adam rose to full height, his naked bronze body shining in the setting sun. She’d gone dumb as she watched him mutter something that sounded like a command or code-word, perhaps a freakin’ magic spell—who knew!

And then it had happened, his Change in all its glory. Gold and green shining wings bursting out of his back, iridescent scales glistening on his body, arms and legs turning to enormous haunches with shining black talons, head arching back to reveal gruesome teeth that were somehow pure white like ivory. It was a terrifying, horrifying, petrifying sight, and it should have made her want to bury her head in the sand and pray for it all to end, to go away, to just stop!

But she couldn’t turn away from him, and she could feel her bear growling on the inside, pushing against her to break free. She frowned as she willed herself to hold it back, and she felt the animal roar as it retreated just enough to give her control. A strange satisfaction went through her when she realized that perhaps she could control her own animal, that maybe she wasn’t going to randomly turn into a bear at the most inopportune moments, that maybe she could still live a normal life as a Shifter.

What the hell is normal now, though, she’d wondered as the dragon turned its massive scaled head towards her, its green-and-gold eyes focused on hers.

“Hop on,” came the voice from the dragon. It had the essence of Adam’s voice, but it was deep, unreal, its dark timber resonating through her entire body. She didn’t think she could refuse if she tried. The power of the dragon’s presence was too overwhelming, too all-encompassing, too goddamn awesome.

“Um, OK,” she said, blinking as she hitched up her long white robe and wondered how she was going to climb on this massive beast. “Do I step on your . . . um . . . feet? Pull myself up with your wings? How do I . . .”

“Change,” commanded Adam. “This is not a pleasure trip. I cannot have a human woman screaming in my ear as I rain hellfire on these murderous bastards. Besides, you will not be able to hang on with your weak hands as we fly and twist in the air. Not to mention we might get into a firefight. You will need your bear’s strength.
