Cursed antique: Gold compact
Joanne Mackie (Gwendolyn Pacey) is back. After her ill-fated prom in “Vanity’s Mirror,” Joanne has graduated high school and is working as a photographer’s assistant at Degage, a high-fashion magazine. At the end of “Vanity’s Mirror,” her sister Helen (Ingrid Veninger) dove off the top of school with Joanne’s boyfriend, Steve. Both died, and the compact rolled away, hidden beneath a bush. Joanne was the one who picked it up, and even though she knew what it did, it was the only keepsake she had to remember Helen, so she kept it. She thought it would be safe with her, in her bag. But she is wrong. Dead wrong!
Tabitha (Laura Robinson), once a top supermodel, is starting to show her age. Her live-in boyfriend, Emory (Barry Greene), is a photographer who is not-so-subtly fooling around with Sandy (Monika Schnarre), the young model who is next in line for Tabitha’s crown. Tabitha was the one who recommended Joanne for the job, so she thinks nothing of telling Tabitha to look through her bag for a tissue. She does, and also finds the compact. Tabitha is just casually dabbing her eyes when the mirror shows her images of Helen, and how the compact worked. Tabitha snaps it shut and slips the compact into her own bag. Joanne doesn’t realize that the compact is missing until that night. She searches everywhere and comes up empty. In desperation she calls Curious Goods, but when Ryan answers she chickens out and hangs up.
Tabitha pays a visit to her plastic surgeon, desperate for something to return herself to her former glory. The doctor tries to talk her out of it, but Tabitha is obsessed. She also can’t stop examining her crow’s feet in the compact. The doctor is temporarily blinded when the compact reflects light into his eyes. Tabitha sees the doctor’s bloodied face in the mirror, and when he tries to leave, Tabitha grabs him by the arm. The doc tumbles over the banister and goes through a glass table. Tabitha’s first instinct is to race down to help him — but then she remembers his bloody reflection in her mirror. She looks again, and sees her crow’s feet are gone.
Joanne finally swallows her pride and goes to Curious Goods. She explains what happened, and Jack is annoyed that she kept the compact, even after she knew what it did. “It was all I had to remember Helen by,” she explains. (Apparently Helen’s bedroom contained nothing pocket-sized.) Micki and Ryan head to work with Joanne to investigate.
Today’s shoot is set in a boxing ring, and Sandy is all set to be this year’s cover girl. Tabitha isn’t scheduled for the shoot, but she shows up anyway, to “wish Sandy her best.” Cora (Lynne Gorman), the magazine’s editor-in-chief, greets Tabitha and mentions that she looks stunning. “Emory’s photos haven’t been doing you justice.” She tells Tabitha to come to tonight’s shoot, and if she looks this good, she might just push Sandy’s cover debut to next year.
