6.4.3 Newly Developed CB[8]-assisted Supramolecular Polymeric Hydrogels with Improved Mechanical Properties

Most of the previously reported CB[8]-SPHs have been synthesized via the dynamic host–guest complexation of CB[8] with the mixtures of two auxiliary functionalized polymers in aqueous media. However, these supramolecular networks have moderate mechanical characteristics, and a higher degree of dynamic cross-linking is needed to improve them.43,44 Unfortunately, this strategy has been restricted due to the limited aqueous solubility of CB[8], the high viscosity of the polymer solution, as well as the limited potential for scale-up and manipulation.

Scherman and coworkers in 2017 reported a facile and modular synthetic approach to prepare stimuli-responsive CB[8]-SPH based on in situ polymerization of vinyl monomer solution (acrylamide-, acrylate- and imidazolium-based hydrophilic monomers) in the presence of a CB[8] host and polymerizable guest molecule (Figure 6.17). 1-Benzyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide was applied as a polymerizable guest molecule to form 1 : 2 complexes with the CB[8] host, and the CB[8] ternary conjugate is then served as a dynamic cross-linker to build the hydrogel network after photo-initiated polymerization at room temperature. Predetermined amounts of CB[8], vinyl monomers and 1-benzyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide were dissolved in deionized water under a nitrogen gas atmosphere, and the solution was then exposed to UV irradiation (4.8 mW cm−2) for 6 h in the presence of photo-initiator.43
