Chapter Seventeen

Rayvin edged past the wolf and the vampire he was still holding down on the floor. Glancing back at Charlotte, whose eyes were still alarmingly red against her pale skin, she picked her way over the debris and looked through the gaping hole in the wall.

The mansion had an indoor swimming pool, but evidently, it had either been recently drained or never filled to begin with. She had to shift to keep from blocking the light as it filtered into the space; it reflected off the closest tiles lining the rectangular basin, barely illuminating the near corners. De Sade was lying at the edge of the light, where the shadows blended to obscure the shallow end. He’d landed on the slope and was lying at an uncomfortable angle, unmoving, his face difficult to see.

“Is he...alive?”

Rayvin tilted her head, squinting. “Nice choice of words. I can’t tell what state he’s in, other than still together and not a heap of ashes and dust. He’s out, at the very least. Not sure how long that will last.” She turned back.

Nearby, Pike Mahonen had slowed his struggling under Grant. The massive Arctic wolf whined quietly at Rayvin, rolling his eyes.

“I know.” Rayvin looked at Charlotte. “I don’t know what they did to him, but we can’t stay here. It’s not safe.”

“We are not leaving my husband.” The statuesque brunette drew herself to her full height, the glow in her eyes pulsed brighter. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“We have to go after Jason,” Rayvin reminded her. “He’s already on the run. If we don’t go after him right now—”

“Then you go—you and Grant.” Charlotte set her jaw, wincing as a fang slipped against her lip and cut a thin line. “I’ll be fine.”

“You don’t know that,” Rayvin told her urgently. “You may look all vampire-ish, but—”

“I think it’s safe to say that she’s got this, Ray,” Grant said.

Rayvin turned to look at him. He was nude and kneeling next to Charlotte’s husband, waving a hand in front of Pike’s eyes.

“See? Nobody home, either from not having fed or being under psychic control. Not sure how long that’s going to last, but I’ll tell you this, too. Charlotte smells different to me, now.”

Rayvin raised an eyebrow at him.

“Trust the wolf’s nose, okay? I could scent her blood as soon as de Sade bit her, and then something about it changed. By the time she was tossing him, this guy wasn’t fighting me as hard anymore. Not until you went by us, so if he was thirsting for her, he’s not now. But you, on the other hand—I wouldn’t get close to him. Or her, either.”

“He’s right, Rayvin.” Charlotte shook her hair back from her face and removed her bloody coat. She regarded the coat briefly before tossing it to one side, clearly no longer needing its warmth. “I let it happen. I’m feeling it right now, in my body, in each of my senses, and every minute you stay here it gets more dangerous for you.
