I'd done my best to rouse Daniel from his bed on the morning of the trek out to visit Joe Waxton, but he'd been having none of it. I’d even promised to bring the extra strong sunblock and that he could ride in the back with the dark tinted windows.

No amount of explaining how this could start the process of closure he'd been wanting, or how it would be fun to see the Catskills, or tales about how excited Marina had been about the pixies last time and how he definitely wouldn't want to miss that again, had dragged him from his bedroom, or even his bed.

He'd just turned over and eventually told me to fuck off, and I'd listened.

I couldn't force him if he refused.

Even if I knew how much Marina's face would fall when I told her the news. And it had. She'd looked devastated by the whole thing.

The rest of us made it easily into the Catskills to the nearest place we could park a car before starting the walk into the mountains. We'd set it all up a couple days in advance to make sure that my SUV and the SUV we rented would be ready to go and on campus so we could load into them early Friday morning and get an early start.

Tom drove the other SUV and had Brian, Zap and Laurie with him. Marina and Colin rode with me. Honestly, we probably could have just brought mine, loaded us all in, especially since Daniel didn’t come, but we’d already arranged to rent it with the hope that he would go.

We made it to the road where we'd have to walk from by half ten in the morning and were only expecting to need to walk for an hour, which would be fine even if it was mostly uphill. We were all fit enough for that.

It was the expectations that were a mess. No one could get a hold on what they thought this guy was going to be like.

All of our expectations were blown out of the water when we did find Joe Waxton's cabin.

If you could call it a cabin. We'd almost walked past it at first, dismissing it as a small mobile network relay tower and hub rather than someone's actual house. The cabin was made of wood, I'd give him that, and it was clearly expertly crafted. It was the various small towers clearly meant for broadcasting signals that threw us all off.

We'd assumed this guy had been in the middle of nowhere to be off the grid for whatever reason. Joe's house looked more like it was the grid.

I looked around at the others. Brian and Laurie stood hand in hand, staring up at it with equally as surprised looks on their faces. Zap, who had surprised everyone by deciding to come along, was staring at it in awe. Colin and Tom looked non-plussed, though were clearly not expecting it. I fell into their category. I didn't care about anything except what the guy could tell us about the bastard.
