It is still true that we can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, and we need to understand what it is that we are pulling loop-through-loop so that we will not be disappointed.

Once upon a time, not so many years ago, thread was cotton and yarn was wool. Not so today. The man-made fibers that have appeared in the marketplace since the end of World War II have changed all of that. The blends and combinations that are available are mind-boggling. They have changed crocheting from doily-making to a high-fashion craft.

I can remember, in my own crocheting lifetime, when crocheters discovered that they could work with bumpy, nubby, and slubbed novelty yarns instead of smooth strands. Isn’t it funny how most of the ruts that we find ourselves in are self-made? Crocheters had just assumed that the thread or yarn had to be smooth—it does not.
