Notions, also listed on the back of the pattern envelope, are the items necessary to complete the construction of your garment. These items are usually hidden inside a garment, though bias tape is used both functionally inside a garment and decoratively outside a garment.

BIAS TAPE

Bias tape is a flexible and non-fraying narrow fabric strip used to finish a garment edge and/or make piping. Varying in width from ½˝ to 3˝, bias tape is available in many colors and in single-fold and double-fold options. For single-fold bias tape, the raw edges have been folded inward and pressed. Double-fold bias tape is folded a second time over itself and pressed. It is good to keep a variety of bias tape packages on hand; you never know when you need to finish a troublesome armhole edge or fraying seam allowances. I use bias tape most often for binding the edges on bodices and corsets.
