MATERIALS

• 12 cattail leaves

• 1 ornamental plum or willow stem

• Basic kit (see p. 10)

• Glass jar (like an asparagus jar)

• Cork stopper attached to 1 large needle (see step 1)

Size of finished vase: 8 in. (20 cm) high and 3½ in. (9 cm) in diameter

INSTRUCTIONS

Preparation of Leaves

1. To make the thin cordage that will be used for the net, split the cattail leaves lengthwise in half and then into fourths using a needle attached to a cork.

2. Using these narrow strips of leaf, make 8 ft. (2.5 m) of thin double-strand cordage that is about ¹/₁₆-⅛ in. (1.5–3 mm) thick, depending on the original width of the leaves (see “Techniques,” p. 18).
