Activity 40
How Colors Make Us Feel
Purpose of this activity: Colors have different vibrations that affect how we feel when we are around them. The purpose of this activity is to develop a greater awareness of the colors around us, how they make us feel, and how we can use colors to our advantage.
Timeframe: 15-30 minutes
What you need: no materials needed
What to do:
1. Have the children stop whatever they are doing and either sit or stand quietly in place.
2. Give the children one minute to observe and become aware of all of the colors around them (indoors or outdoors).
3. Seat the children in a circle. Ask them what colors they saw. Have the children check in to see how they feel individually right now. If that feeling had a color, what color would it be? Share with the children that different colors can make us feel different ways—especially if there’s a lot of one color. Colors can make us feel calm, energized, restless, joyful, peaceful, and many other ways. Ask the children to close their eyes and picture a blue sky. How does it make them feel? What if the sky were a bright red? Would that feel different? How? Have them picture a big, grassy-green lawn. How does that feel? A bright red fire truck? A field of yellow daffodils? How do they think they’d feel if they had to wear all black all the time? All blue? All red? All yellow?
4. Explain that, generally, there are warm colors (reds, yellows, oranges) and cool colors (blues, greens, purples). The warm colors—especially the bright ones—tend to make us feel energized. Therefore, you wouldn’t want your bedroom to be red, or it might be difficult to sleep in there. The cool colors tend to calm us down, so blue or some other cool color would be a better choice for a bedroom. Bright colors are fun to have in a playroom. A combination of different colors can help us feel balanced.
5. Encourage the children to identify the colors used in their homes and in their bedrooms. Later discuss how different rooms made them feel. Suggest that they become more conscious of the colors in their various environments. Brainstorm ways to use colors to help them with their feelings and moods, and see how creative everyone can be.
