Colin

Emily’s words ring loud and clear in my brain as I drive the short distance back to Violet’s house, on the wrong side of the road, I’ll have you. But I think I’ve mastered it. I haven’t killed anyone or hit a tree, so I call that a win. I wave to Clara as she steps from her house. Her actions are like clockwork.

Seriously, I can’t believe Emily announced that we had hate sex to a restaurant packed with people. She’s got it all wrong, though. There was no hate involved. At least not on my part. There could have been on Violet’s end. I’m sure she hates what I’m doing to her beloved park and town. I park and hurry inside, in search of Lucky. I find him grooming himself on my pillow. That’s bloody disgusting.

“Hey,” I say to stop him, and he gags, like he’s about to bring up a huge hairball on my side of the bed. “Want to go for a walk?”

Wow, if looks could kill.

Okay, Colin. Come on. You’ve got this. You’re bigger, and higher on the evolutionary food chain, surely to God you can wrangle one hairless cat.

Puffing up my chest to show dominance, which pretty much brings a smirk to Lucky’s face, I step up to him with the leash behind my back, and scoop him up. He hisses at me, and I hook the collar to his neck as he scratches at my arm.

“Ha,” I say. “Who’s smarter now?”

Yeah, I know, you are.

I set him down and practically drag him outdoors. He stretches and glances around, raising his face to the sun. “Yeah, it’s nice out here in the real world, isn’t it?”

He inches back, and that’s when it hits me. Shite. Maybe he’s afraid. After getting dropped off in the middle of nowhere, he probably thinks I’m going to do the same to him. I sink down on the stoop, and sit there for a long moment, giving him time to adjust and maybe trust me a little. He clearly has men issues and I’d like to get my hands on the guy who did this to him.

“Hey, mate,” I say quietly and shift to face him. “I’m not going to leave you anywhere. I promise.” He sits against the rail his back braced like he’s in fight or flight mode, and I get it, he strikes out at me because he’s afraid. “Do you have any idea how lucky you are?” I shake my head and smile. “You’re the smartest cat I know, to find your way to Violet. She’s going to be a wicked cat mum, even to a cat with no hair, and you’re going to have a brilliant life here with her. Just don’t touch any of her mice. They’re off limits. Though, I must say you don’t strike me as the mouse hunting kind of cat. That’s a bit beneath you.”

I grin as I think of Violet’s protective nature. Honestly, I’ve never met another woman like her.
