Colin
Emilyâs words ring loud and clear in my brain as I drive the short distance back to Violetâs house, on the wrong side of the road, Iâll have you. But I think Iâve mastered it. I havenât killed anyone or hit a tree, so I call that a win. I wave to Clara as she steps from her house. Her actions are like clockwork.
Seriously, I canât believe Emily announced that we had hate sex to a restaurant packed with people. Sheâs got it all wrong, though. There was no hate involved. At least not on my part. There could have been on Violetâs end. Iâm sure she hates what Iâm doing to her beloved park and town. I park and hurry inside, in search of Lucky. I find him grooming himself on my pillow. Thatâs bloody disgusting.
âHey,â I say to stop him, and he gags, like heâs about to bring up a huge hairball on my side of the bed. âWant to go for a walk?â
Wow, if looks could kill.
Okay, Colin. Come on. Youâve got this. Youâre bigger, and higher on the evolutionary food chain, surely to God you can wrangle one hairless cat.
Puffing up my chest to show dominance, which pretty much brings a smirk to Luckyâs face, I step up to him with the leash behind my back, and scoop him up. He hisses at me, and I hook the collar to his neck as he scratches at my arm.
âHa,â I say. âWhoâs smarter now?â
Yeah, I know, you are.
I set him down and practically drag him outdoors. He stretches and glances around, raising his face to the sun. âYeah, itâs nice out here in the real world, isnât it?â
He inches back, and thatâs when it hits me. Shite. Maybe heâs afraid. After getting dropped off in the middle of nowhere, he probably thinks Iâm going to do the same to him. I sink down on the stoop, and sit there for a long moment, giving him time to adjust and maybe trust me a little. He clearly has men issues and Iâd like to get my hands on the guy who did this to him.
âHey, mate,â I say quietly and shift to face him. âIâm not going to leave you anywhere. I promise.â He sits against the rail his back braced like heâs in fight or flight mode, and I get it, he strikes out at me because heâs afraid. âDo you have any idea how lucky you are?â I shake my head and smile. âYouâre the smartest cat I know, to find your way to Violet. Sheâs going to be a wicked cat mum, even to a cat with no hair, and youâre going to have a brilliant life here with her. Just donât touch any of her mice. Theyâre off limits. Though, I must say you donât strike me as the mouse hunting kind of cat. Thatâs a bit beneath you.â
I grin as I think of Violetâs protective nature. Honestly, Iâve never met another woman like her.
