The biodynamic model

It may be useful to distinguish between a ‘biodynamic approach’ and the ‘biodynamic model’:

• Biodynamics (working with natural forces) is an inherent part of all cranio-sacral therapy.

• The ‘biodynamic model’ refers to a particular way of working.

When a cranio-sacral therapist describes themselves as a ‘biodynamic cranio-sacral therapist’ it generally means that they are working to a ‘biodynamic model’. This does not indicate that other cranio-sacral therapists are not working in a biodynamic manner. There are many therapists working in a very biodynamic manner but not describing themselves as biodynamic cranio-sacral therapists, who simply see biodynamics as an inherent part of cranio-sacral therapy. There are perhaps others working to a biodynamic model but not necessarily working in a very biodynamic way. There are also cranio-sacral therapists working in a more biomechanical manner (although not generally describing themselves specifically as biomechanical – simply as cranio-sacral therapists). There are also many cranio-sacral therapists combining biodynamic, biomechanical and other approaches and not feeling any need for a specific title. Most therapists are not concerned with labels and are more concerned with practising effective therapy.
