Unlike watercolor, ink is characteristically waterproof. Layering transparent layers on top of each other with ink without the colors mixing can give nice effects to your work. You can dilute the ink with water, which makes it light, but it is deep and rich in its unmixed form. When the ink dries, it is a bit shiny, which can be an unexpectedly nice result.

When I paint with ink, I like to combine it with a masking technique. With the help of a masking fluid, you can mask the areas you want to keep white on the paper. Simply paint with the rubber-like liquid in the areas where you do not want any paint. Let it dry and then go over it with the ink. When the ink is completely dry, remove the masked areas by rubbing it off with your finger or using an eraser. The motif appears almost like magic!
