Sample of an Essay with a Score of 3

The following essay states a position and supports it with relevant examples, but the analysis is weak and the ideas are not well-developed.

It sounds very easy—give children the same clothes to wear at school, and things will be great. Well I’m not so sure. The belief is that school uniforms will allow children to focus more and not worry about what they wear. In fact, they’ll just find other ways to differentiate themselves, which may be worse or more extreme than if they could wear what they wanted in the first place.

My niece goes to a private school, which has uniforms. Because the kids can’t express themselves through their clothes, they do it through other ways. One girl has her ear pierced seven times. Another one has dyed her hair purple. Would these extreme measures be necessary if they didn’t have a uniform policy? I don’t think so. I’m worried about these kids going too far trying to be recognized or different from their peer groups.

In conclusion, uniforms are not a very good idea. They just lead to more extreme behaviors, as I have shown above.
