Story #4 Events
You know, I didn’t hear the term, CP Time until I was in college. I was in the Magnet program at a football top ten school. The Black Caucus used to say to us when we had events that there was no CP Time, if you wanted to make a good impression. I never knew what that meant. Ever since I was born late, my family was always late to Sunday services where the whole row had to hear the “excuse me” or where we had to be split up because there wasn’t enough seats in the same area. It was embarrassing.
The director used to say to all of us even though there were more than just colored folks there, she’d say, “Why are all of you on CP Time? Get here when the schedule says to be here. She made all of us set our clocks and watches ten minutes fast because the majority of the class, Asian, Hispanic, Colored and Indian, were always late by at least ten minutes. Some people were left on campus when CP Time was an issue. I was at the end of my freshman year before I understood what it meant. After that I’ve been using it no matter what color the person is. Sometimes it flies out my mouth so fast I forget whom I am talking to at times.
