I went to the barn to check out the horses. These poor things were so stressed out by the other horses that they were starting to get sick. I had worked with horses in the same condition, and they needed to be taken from their negative environment to a better and more peaceful space.

I didn’t see anyone when I came in, I heard him instead. I never thought that I'd hear his voice in such a mellow way. He was singing to Universe and I was shocked to know that DK had that side to him.

I got a brush and started to take care of one beautiful white mare as I enjoyed his song. He must not have noticed me coming in since he was singing as beautifully as if he was serenading the horses there.

The previously immobile horses had their ears moving as he sang. He wasn’t just singing for Universe, otherwise, he'd have kept it to a hushed tone. He was singing for all the horses there.

If there was anyone among the Kings who really deserved to be here, it was him. June showed off a lot, and Bobby wanted to keep the flimsy control he had as the eldest. But DK was just here for the horses. He didn’t need to tell people that he was reliable. They just gravitated towards him. I noticed that when I gave instructions to the helpers, they would often say that they would run it by him first. But they didn’t say that to undermine me or Bobby. They just really wanted him to know. I thought that DK kept everyone under his thumb, but not by the throat. So he was loved and respected by the people in the ranch.

I went over to him to see if Universe needed anything. He stopped a song that he was about to start. I wanted to greet him, but he choked on air when he saw me. “Sorry, are you okay?” I rubbed his back to help him breathe properly.

“I’m okay. I’m okay.” He coughed a couple more times and was red-faced when he looked at me again. “Are you?”

There it was, the DK that matched his soft and lovely song. “How do you do that?” I asked.

“Do what?”

Be strong and beautiful while being rough and abrasive. “Being the boss around here without Bobby figuring it out.”

He smiled, “You figured it out, huh?”

I nodded. “It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that everyone looks to you when something is happening. Is that why he and June got Universe pregnant, was it to get back at you?” I figured it out later when the ranch hands told me that Bobby allowed June to get Universe pregnant to get back at DK. They figured that the youngest was trying to get on Bobby’s good side to work against DK.

DK sighed, “I think so too.” He touched the horse’ belly and took another breath before he continued. “He knew that if Universe died I'd be a mess.
