Even as I was writing this chapter on communications, the sound of The Redhead's voice broke my concentration. "Honey, can you come help me with this?"

My first thought was, "Now, she knows I'm in the middle of writing this book on courtship after marriage"-and then before I could finish the thought, the irony caused me to stop and laugh out loud. Isn't it fascinating how we instinctively and instantaneously rate what we are doing as being more important than what our mate is doing?

In this case, what I was doing was clearly the most urgent and important. After all, a book on the family-and specifically on courtship-would rate somewhere in importance between the Bible and The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. And what was The Redhead doing that was so important she dared interrupt me to ask for my help? Nothing-except wrapping Christmas presents, preparing dinner, and setting the table for this family for which I was so passionately declaring my love (and especially my love for her) in this book.

The first time she will know why I was grinning so big when I responded to her call for help will be when she reads these words in this book. When the impact of my own hypocrisy hit me, I laughed at myself and responded to her call. The "interruption" took all of three minutes (counting the hugging time), and I was "back to the drawing board"-a happier and hopefully wiser and more sensitive husband. By responding to her call for help, I had communicated my love for her and her importance to me.
