Clarence Tom Ashley (born on September 29, 1895, in Bristol, Tennessee) was, with Dock Walsh, a founder of the Carolina Tar Heels in 1925. About 1932 Ashley performed with Roy Acuff in a medicine-show act (Acuff wore blackface), and it is interesting that Ashley too recorded a Lulu song, “Shout Little Lulu.” It was cut in 1966, when Ashley was seventy-one years old (he died the following year), and released in the Folkways album Clarence Ashley and Tex Isley.
