CONCLUSION
The biodiversity of a coppice woodland in rotation can be awe-inspiring. It is unlikely that there will be many rarities, but what coppices lack in rare species, they often make up for in sheer weight of biomass. There have been so many arguments put forward in recent years in favour of non-intervention. Britain already has plenty of non-intervention and low-intensity management woodlands. What many woodlands need, in particular woodlands that still exhibit coppice characteristics and especially many ancient semi-natural woodlands, is to be coppiced again. Even if we don’t truly understand all the reasons for the decline in some wildlife, such as woodland butterflies and birds, the least we can do is provide the kind of habitat that they require in this country to be successful. If enough woodland is coppiced, we may be able to boost the number of woodland birds and butterflies to make their populations more secure again.
